Event branding brief

Guidelines International Network (G-I-N) is a networking organisation that promotes collaboration and helps its members create high quality clinical practice guidelines on a global scale. Annually G-I-N hosts their conference in a different country every year, bringing its members together from all over the world. Manchester won the bid to host the annual G-I-N conference in 2018 along with NICE and SIGN and asked me to design the event branding.

Research

Manchester was recently voted the European City of Science by leading science figures and is the home of Graphene (it’s where the one-atom thick material was first isolated!). Not to mention it is where physicist Brian Cox (one of my faves here) is a professor of particle physics at the University of Manchester. It seemed fitting to create an identity which celebrated this inspiring collaborative community and the ground-breaking discoveries the city has recently made, using graphene as the core concept.

Development

By taking the geometric shape of the graphene material, we started to look at how a grid system could be developed for the identity. From this we designed the main logo for the event branding to be a simple yet striking modular M for Manchester.

A scientific identity

Building on the graphene style, I designed a teaser campaign at various events on the lead up to the conference. As there wasn’t a defined core message at this stage for the conference, I focussed on Manchester and used the graphene inspired grid as image framers to contain showcase location shots of the city on banners, posters, flyers and web banners.

This was an exciting conference for G-I-N as it was the first time in years that it was on home ground. So we felt it was an appropriate time to celebrate the brand. The audience were leaders in the medical research industry so we wanted to make sure the look and feel was professional and corporate. For example, in the photography we used the vibrant G-I-N orange as a highlight flash only while the G-I-N blue was the dominant hue. An example of how the photography, tone of voice, typography and grid really came to life is in the sponsorship and exhibition brochure we produced.

Time to delegate

It was a proud moment after months in the making seeing the G-I-N 2018 event branding come to life at newly refurbished Principal Hotel.

The branding was applied to areas all around the venue including the sustainable delegate bags, pull up banners, posters, wayfinding, sticky notes, main stage, podium, powerpoint presentations and lanyards.

I have had our logos projected, made in to micro laser cut paper confetti, shaped from balloons by a clown and flown across the world, but never have I experienced an identity I have created being spun on a laser light by a performance artist before! Science and art really did come together for the launch of the conference at the Science Museum in Manchester. I was so impressed with what the event team created in the space, even live selfies of delegates were beamed on the screens all around the venue. It’s the small details that make a difference.
