Sport branding brought to life
I was honoured when Boccia UK won the bid to host the 2018 World Boccia Championships in Liverpool and asked me to create the look and feel for the event. The court markings were new for 2018, so it was a great opportunity to highlight this change visually. 2018 was also the first time the event was ticketed, so it was also essential to educate and bring awareness of the sport to the general public.

Early thoughts
When it came to the sport branding, I wanted to avoid the cliché of using globes, wheelchairs, ramps and Boccia ball patterns. As well as the sport it was hosting, representing the host city Liverpool was also important. We researched English Pop Artist Peter Blake, best known for co-creating the sleeve design of the Beatles album Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the court markings for Boccia and shields used in sporting crests.

Boccia goes Liver
The result was bold, clean, striking and a refreshing change to the traditional look and feel from World Championships in the past. The identity cleverly represented the new Boccia floor markings and incorporated elements of English pop culture relevant to the host city. Its simple grid like design made the branding identity flexible; each symbol could be used by itself or in conjunction with a number or all of the others.

Flexible formats
The logo lock-up needed to be used across print and digital media. So we had to consider how the format would work as portrait, horizontal and extreme horizontal, as well as with and without venue details.
18 logo variations were created in both BisFED red and blue as well as black and reversed out.

Nailed it!
It was a proud moment to see the sport branding come to life across the event, on the boccia playing courts, event signage, t-shirts, foam fingers, medals, media ident and even florescent lights. Spectators and team members went the extra mile and decorated their nails with their home countries flags and the event branding.

Action replay
The 2018 Boccia World Championships were live streamed on the BBC website, giving more exposure for this great sport, and that coverage included the branding in the scorecards and in the replay ident. You can see it action in the video below with Britain’s own David Smith pulling off an excellent shot against Thailand’s Subin Tipmanee.
